Dogs with Allergies Treatment

Almost everyone knows that man’s best friend can be the cause of allergy symptoms, but did you know that dogs could experience allergies, as well? According to veterinarians, dogs are often bothered by the same types of allergens that can set off you runny nose or itchy eyes. They can even experience similar symptoms. The most common symptom of canine allergies is all-over itchiness. This can be caused by a myriad of different allergens, but the end result is that the dog itches so much that he may scratch or bite until an area becomes bald, bloody or even infected. This localized itching is commonly found around the rear end of a dog. Dogs may also experience “hay fever” type symptoms like wheezing, sneezing, red or weeping eyes and dripping noses. In other instances, they may experience gastrointestinal symptoms that involve vomiting and diarrhea.

So what causes these symptoms? Similar to humans, dog allergies can come from common contact sources, like insect bites, inhaled substances or foods. The most common insect induced allergy comes from the saliva of a flea. A flea infestation is bad enough as it is, but when your animal is allergic, they may become overwhelmed with the itching. Some animals resort to neurotic behaviors, such as excessive licking as a result. It is best to take preventative action to avoid an infestation, rather than to try to treat an allergic reaction to fleas. Talk to your pet’s veterinarian to decide what preventative treatment will work best for your dog and for your area. Other dogs may be allergic to inhaled substances similar to the things that make their owners sneeze. These include pollens, molds, dust mites and other typical allergenic substances. It may be impossible for your pet to avoid such allergens especially during certain times of the year. It is best to keep your house, and your pet’s area, as clean as possible. Some pet owners have also found that increasing the number of baths their animal had offered some relief. These baths not only served to rinse allergenic substances from their fur, but many hypoallergenic shampoos contain ingredients designed to combat itchiness caused by an allergic reaction. Still more dogs develop allergies to certain foods. Most commonly, the offending allergen is a protein substance in their dog food. In order to discover the source of the food allergy, these dogs must be kept on a strict diet of special food prescribed by their vet for 8-12 weeks before reintroducing different proteins one at a time. It can be a painstaking process, but for pets that suffer from food allergies, it can greatly increase their quality of life.

How to install a flag pole in your backyard

Many of us show our patriotic side by flying the stars and stripes or maybe even our state flag. Many times you can fly your flag from the side of your house but the best way to show it off is to erect a flag pole in your backyard. Standard sizes for residential flagpoles are 12 or 20 feet and usually come with an iodized coating to protect it from the elements.

The steps for installing a flagpole are as follows:

  1. Call before you dig anything in your front yard or backyard. Usually your city can advise you if there are any buried cables or gas lines under your property.
  2. Find an open space that is free from obstructions such as your house or nearby trees.
  3. It is best to dig a hole suitable to fill with concrete and you will want to ensure that the hole is at least 16 inches in diameter and 3 feet deep.
  4. Place a concrete containing tube that is at least 2 inches above ground level and place it within your newly dug hole.
  5. Install your flagpole in position by bracing it with three ten foot 2×4′s and lashing them to the pole.
  6. Make sure you have a level and properly stabilize and ensure that the pole is perfectly level.
  7. Mix the appropriate number of bags of premix concrete and use a shovel to carefully deposit the concrete at the base of the concrete containing tube.
  8. Use a 1×1 stick to poke into the concrete occasionally while filling to ensure that there are no air pockets.
  9. Once you have filled the concrete containing tube to the top re-check to ensure that the flagpole is still level.
  10. Back-fill the soil the remaining soil that was removed when you dug your hole.

If you have securely fastened the pole using the 2×4′s then you should not have any movement.  Allow for 48 hours for the concrete to harden before removing the supports and allow for an additonal 4 days before you put up your flag on your new flagpole.

Enjoy!

Dealing with a dry cough

Physicians classify cough’s into tow distinct categories a productive and a non-productive cough. It is important to note that there are variations on each but the classification is productive and non-productive.

What is a Productive cough?

When one has a productive cough, also known as chest cough, it is usually due to a viral or bacterial infection and needs to be treated as such. With this type of cough we expel the phlegm which has formed in our respiratory passages, so that abnormal mucus that should not be there and germs are eliminated from the respiratory tract and breathing becomes easier. The term even seems self-explanatory because as it would describe the cough itself was a productive way to clear our the gunk.

Dry persistent cough

Dry persistent cough

What is a Non-productive cough (Dry cough)?

The other side of a cough is a non-productive cough which is dry, tickling and downright irritating. This cough can for example be caused by phlegm that is so viscous or sticky that it is not loosened and expectorated. Because it cannot be expelled it stays in the lungs and continues to irate. It can also have an allergic or neurotic origin or can be caused by other perhaps more severe diseases.

When dealing with a dry cough it is advised that you look beyond the temporary inconvenience and see if there is a larger issue such as: household environment, chronic asthma, respiratory problems.

Dealing with Bed Bugs

Bed bugs were, almost a decade ago, a thing of the past.  However they are making an astounding and unwelcome resurgence.  Int he past year alone health officials state that there is a 5000% increase compared to numbers only a decade ago.  This is not limited to private homes, many hotels and motels have seen a sharp rise in the number of bed bug infestations.

A typical Bed Bug

How to Spot Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs are a secretive species, bed bugs look for shelter in dark locations, primarily close to where you are sleeping.  So look under the mattresses, around the floorboards, under the carpet and behind the bed skirts.  Bed Bugs like to stay close together and you know you have come across an infestation as they have this distinctive “buggy” smell to them.  another sign of Bed Bugs is spotting on your mattress not unlike that of blood spotting from your legs or feet.

How to get rid of Bed Bugs

Getting rid of Bed Bugs is at the top of everyone’s list when they come in contact with them.  although we are always up for people doing things themselves we also believe a licensed pest controller should be consulted when dealing with bed bugs.  Licencesed pet controllers know how to undertake careful inspection and know where to look to find all of the bed bugs within the space you are dealing with.  Once all of the suspected areas have been identified, a powerful bed bug specific insecticide needs to be applied.

There are some non-chemical approaches to dealing with bed bugs and they include the use of steam and intense vacuuming.  Any clothing infested with bed bugs need to be washed at least 3 times in very hot water to make sure that any larvae that may still exist are destroyed.  Bed bugs do not hide out in the open and have survived because they are adept at hiding in all sorts of spaced.  As such we suggest that you got the extra distance and hire a licensed exterminator to deal with the situation.

Trouble Sleeping

Everyone has experienced trouble sleeping or insomnia at one time or another.  It is very common to find it hard to go to sleep and there can be many reason why it can be a problem.

Some causes for short term sleep loss are the following:

Jet lag -Having just completed a trip that required that you cross several time zones – your body has become accustomed to the time zone you just left.  Getting your body acclimatized to your home time zone can take up to a week.

Changes in shift work – Many shift workers find the changes in their regular routine cause them to have sleepless nights.  Any disruption to our daily sleep patterns is a significant contributing cause of sleep difficulties.

Excessive or unpleasant noise – Well this goes without saying that if you are surrounded by a lot of noise such as construction work or perhaps the bar down the street you can find yourself having a hard time going to sleep.

Uncomfortable room temperature – We have all experienced those sleepless nights in the summer when the air conditioner broke down and the fan was just not cutting it.  Room temperature can be a big part of not being able to sleep and that can be if the average temperature is too hot or too cold as well.

Stressful situations in life – Some of the most stressful situations we can find ourselves in are such things as exam preparation or the sickness or loss of a loved one.  Other stresses come from relationship issues and employment challenges – the mind is very good at staying active and as a result it can keep you up.

High Altitudes – Did you know that trying to sleep on top of a mountain is very difficult?  Some say it is because of the lack of oxygen and some research indicates that it may be because of our innate nature to be afraid of heights.  Either way if you find yourself in the Swiss Alps and cannot sleep – there may be more to it than you think.

In general Insomnia is a symptom, not a disease.   You cannot catch insomnia and that means it is something that you have to change your behaviour if you want to get rid of it.

Having troubles sleeping can relate to something called sleep hygiene.  On the components of good sleep hygiene is behavioral therapy for insomnia.  Here are some simple steps you can take to help you with having trouble sleeping:

1)       Sleep as much as you need to feel rested but do not oversleep.

2)      Get lots and lots of exercise on a regular basis.  The best time is  4-5 hours before you want to go to sleep.

3)      Don’t try and force yourself to go to sleep – that does not work.

4)      Try and keep a regular sleep schedule.  If you are constantly changing things around you will have a really hard time getting to sleep.

5)      Do not drink caffeinated beverages or other “Red Bull” types of drinks in the late afternoon (tea, coffee, soft drinks etc.)

6)      If you can try and not smoke just before you go to bed.

7)      Don’t starve yourself by going to be hungry.

8)      Make sure the room you are sleeping in is the right temperature and that the lights are off and that any noise is kept to a minimum.

9)      Have an empty mind – that means don’t go to bed trying to deal with the issues of the day that will keep you up.

Kitchen Renovations

Kitchen Renovations

Learn how you can renovate your kitchen

Renovating your kitchen will add ease to your lifestyle and value to your home. Here are the 10 most important things to consider when you’re updating your kitchen.

  1. Use quality materials – quality drawer slides and hinges mean cabinet doors will stay closed and drawers won’t stick. Stay away from drawers that are stapled together or made of particleboard. For cabinet interiors, wood veneer is more durable than melamine, laminate, MDF or particleboard.
  2. Determine cabinet heights.  If you have eight-foot ceilings, choose cabinets that go to the ceiling. They offer more storage, enabling you to use extra wall space for artwork or open shelves. If your ceilings are higher than eight feet, leave 15 to 18 inches above the cabinets.
  3. Decide whether to paint or stain.  Though stained-wood cabinetry is forgiving, most finishes date quickly and aren’t easily altered. Brush-painted cabinets can lend a unique personality.
  4. Select an elegant countertop.   White Carrara marble (honed or acid washed and sealed) and stained wood add elegance and warmth. We also like honed Kirkstone slate, soapstone and Wiarton limestone, and plastic laminate with a wood edge for a sophisticated look.
  5. Install an island that works.  Beware of placing a bulky cube in the middle of the room. We like islands that have an open, airy look. Ideally, an island should be unencumbered by appliances, but if you want it to house a dishwasher-sink combo or a cooktop, try to maintain the light look of a leggy harvest table.
  6. Don’t overdo the details.  Design accents such as pediments over stoves and plaster mouldings on cabinet fronts can represent decorative excess. Remember that the style of your kitchen should be compatible with the rest of your home.
  7. Avoid maintenance nightmares.  Natural surfaces with inherent texture — slate, terra-cotta, brick and tumbled marble — are more difficult to clean but camouflage the odd crumb. Smooth surfaces in light colours, such as white laminate counters or ceramic floors, are easy to clean but show everything. And as much as we love stainless steel, it’s not easy to keep smudge-free.
  8. Stick to basic appliances.  Instead of lots of appliances and gadgets, consider selecting a few reliable basics. For example, a commercial-quality stainless-steel range makes an interesting focal point and takes up less space than separate wall ovens and a cooktop.
  9. Incorporate an adjacent dining room.  A clever design, plus the appropriate lighting and furniture, will let you adapt the room’s atmosphere to suit any occasion. Consider a banquette design combined with slipcovered chairs for an efficient use of space.
  10. Add interest.  Your kitchen should reflect you, not look like a showroom. Before designing the space, search for a piece of unique furniture and use it in your design — a room full of floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall kitchen cabinets looks boring and uninspired.

Install Windows

Once you have prepared the rough opening, installing a prehung window is relatively easy. The exact method depends on the type of window you are putting in and the manufacturer you have chosen. The directions offered here are intended as helpful guidelines—be sure to follow the specific instructions that come with your new window.

Prehung windows are blocked and braced to prevent damage during shipping; in most cases, you should not remove the bracing until the window is fastened in place. After you have installed the unit, be sure the sash operates freely (for an operable window) before you install the interior trim or caulk the exterior. Contact a window installation contractor if you feel the job is beyond your skill level.
